Yeasty breads have long existed for centuries, however, the introduction of sugar and spices during the 17th century that created many of the popular desserts we now know and love – such as the famous cinnamon rolls.

Going way back to ancient times, the Egyptians and Romans were recorded to have eaten a variety of sticky buns before the invention of cinnamon rolls! Laden with raisins, honey, and dates that provided a sweet and gooey texture. However, Ancient Egyptians used to use cinnamon as an embalming tool for the royalty and not for culinary purposes.

The Age of Exploration made cinnamon a more readily available spice throughout Europe. The Dutch at the time colonized Sri Lanka, which meant that cinnamon has now become a primary focus for export from there.

Bakers began adding cinnamon to their sugary fritters, creating early versions of the now cinnamon roll. The English Chelsea Bun was created, becoming a breakfast staple in Europe a the time as it spread across bakeries.

German and Swedish immigrants to America introduced the cinnamon roll during their arrival in the 17th century.

The dessert remains one of the least changed cultural recipes to date!
